William Kim

Aspiring software engineer based in Orange County, working close to the metal: distributed systems, networking, and operating systems. I'm earning an M.S. in Computer Science at Georgia Tech after starting my career in sales and marketing, where I kept drifting toward the technical side of the job.

Distributed file system

A client–server file system where multiple clients stay in sync with a central store over gRPC, built against gRPC compiled from source.

  • Five RPCs for fetch, store, list, stat and delete, with streaming for large files
  • Write locks so concurrent clients can't clobber each other's changes
  • CRC32 checksums to skip transferring files the other side already has
  • Async callbacks that push server-side changes to every connected client
  • Tracked down a static-initialization segfault and fixed it with an explicit library initializer
  • C++
  • gRPC
  • Protocol Buffers

Multithreaded file server

A boss–worker file server and client speaking a custom GetFile protocol, written in C. My first C project, taken from zero to passing every autograder case.

  • Thread pool with a shared work queue guarded by mutexes and condition variables
  • pread() for thread-safe concurrent reads of the same file
  • Handled SIGPIPE and partial sends so a dropped client never takes the server down
  • C
  • pthreads
  • POSIX sockets

BGP prefix hijacking

Built a six-autonomous-system network in Mininet running FRRouting, then demonstrated how a rogue AS can hijack traffic by announcing a more attractive route.

  • Peer-only hijack where a neighboring AS draws traffic away from the legitimate origin
  • Full-core hijack using eBGP multihop sessions to reach beyond direct neighbors
  • Confirmed both attacks against live traffic, not just routing tables

SDN firewall

A software-defined firewall that turns a policy file into OpenFlow rules pushed to switches by a POX controller.

  • 24-rule policy covering CIDR ranges, protocols and port-level filtering
  • Passed both the standard (86/86) and alternate (45/45) test suites
  • Python
  • OpenFlow
  • SDN

Internet routing measurements

Analyzed real BGP update and RIB dumps from public route collectors with pybgpstream: prefix growth, AS path lengths, routing churn and short-lived announcements.

  • Added a shared parse cache so six analyses reuse one pass over the dumps instead of six
  • Python
  • pybgpstream

About me

Off the clock

I came to software sideways. I graduated from the University of Southern California with a B.S. in Business Administration, then worked in sales at Gigabyte and marketing at Mora. Those jobs kept pulling me toward the technical side: analyzing client data, setting up the office network, building a livestreaming studio, and earning my CompTIA A+ along the way. Eventually I wanted to understand what was happening underneath, so I went back to school for computer science and headed straight for the low-level courses.

I still like the bridge between technical work and the people it serves. I'm happiest when I can take something messy, figure out how it actually works, and make it reliable.

Outside of coursework I love cinema and catching movies in theaters, lift weights, play basketball while rooting for the Lakers, play Apex Legends and Magic: The Gathering badly but enthusiastically, and live with cats who have strong opinions about my keyboard. I also work part-time as a barista while I'm in school.
